As AI adoption grows more commonplace in the private sector, government agencies are beginning to explore how to ethically adopt AI to improve services. A key component to the responsible adoption of AI in the public sector context is a robust ethical framework to help surface and mitigate AI associated risks. This talk will discuss current trends in AI, common ways AI can appear in the state context, and a review a practical framework for thinking about mitigating AI risk. The talk will call on his past experience applying an ethical AI toolkit to data science projects for the City of San Francisco and his current experience piloting an ethical AI toolkit at the state.

Bio
Blake Valenta is the Statewide Data Programs Manager serving on the team of the Statewide Chief Data Officer at GovOps. Prior to working for the state, Blake worked as the Analytics Strategist for DataSF in the City and County of San Francisco where he led their Data Science and Dashboarding services. He holds a MA in Public Policy from UCLA and a BA in political science from the University of Chicago.
